First Pickleball Tournament at San Vicente Resort

Eighty-two pickleball players competed last Saturday in three divisions: Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed.

On Saturday, June 29, pickleball competitors of all skill levels, from recreational to advanced, came together at the resort to play on 12 courts.
Tournament Lead and avid pickleball player Nim Miranda, the SDCEA Executive Assistant, suggested and meticulously planned every aspect of the event. She reached out and collaborated with an experienced and well-known Tournament Director, Dorcy Norton, to make the day a success.

Forty-eight players in the Men’s and Women’s divisions began their matches at 8 am, when the temperature was cooler, and 34 players in the Mixed division started at 11 am, playing in almost 90-degree heat by the end of the match.

Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals were awarded to the winners in each division and skill level. The Men’s Division competed in four skill levels, the Women’s Division competed in two skill levels, and the Mixed Division competed in three skill levels. Photos of all the winners are posted on the Facebook page San Diego Pickleball Events.

Gearbox, a pickleball equipment brand, provided free balls for the tournament. Two booths were on site: one featuring 'Honoring USA Heroes' with Founder and CEO Ed Presnillo, and another showcasing Pickleball apparel 'Love This Bag' with Julie Abrams.

Over the past several years, pickleball has experienced significant growth worldwide and in our community. The sport has seen a surge in popularity across all age groups due to its accessibility, engaging gameplay, and social appeal. The courts are located west of the lodge in Courts 3 and 4, and in Court 2, a tennis court can be set up for pickleball play. Contact Member-Guest Services at 760-789-8290 x0 to reserve a court.

Stay tuned for an announcement of our second tournament later this year when the weather cools down.
