Jan Ryan’s Annual Yard Sale

Jan Ryan’s annual yard sale is only weeks away, so get your shopping lists ready!

Realtor and SDCE member, Jan Ryan, has hosted her annual yard sale in San Diego Country Estates since 1990, and it has more than tripled in size since then! “The first year, 23 homes participated. And I was so nervous hoping people would come.” Jan had advertised everywhere she could think of, from the Ramona Sentinel to the Union-Tribune. Her hard work paid off with a successful turnout. “I got up that morning, and the streets were packed with cars.”

An agent in her parents’ neighborhood in Northern California used to do a similar event, which is how Jan got the idea. Now, Jan says she’s even had people from out of state tell her they plan their visits around the annual yard sale so that they can attend. The ad she runs says 75 homes, but she says it usually ends up being closer to 100 homes participating. In addition to the many homes taking part, the Equestrian Center is joining this year.

Jan’s favorite part of the event is how it brings the community together. “It’s almost like a Norman Rockwell painting. You go out there and get to visit everybody. It’s something people don’t really do anymore, with social media.” Neighbors visit with one another, kids set up lemonade stands and bake sales and the end of Daza Drive turns into a block party of sorts. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Since this is such a large event, Jan has a few tips. “If you’re a serious shopper, start at the back end because they usually don’t get as many people until later.” Also, although the yard sale technically begins at 7 am, she has seen people get out there as early as 6 am, so set your alarm and have your coffee ready.

Even though Jan does extensive advertising for this annual yard sale, reaching people from down the hill to out of state, she says there are still many who tell her they are just hearing about it for the first time. “So, if anyone thinks there is a spot that could use advertising for this event, please feel free to reach out and let me know. I want everyone to be able to participate.”

The yard sale will be on Saturday, April 27, at 7 am. Maps and addresses of the participating homes will be available in numerous places as the date approaches, including at The Country Village Store. Participating homes will also distribute maps on the day of the yard sale.

Mark your calendars and get ready to find some treasures.

She wore the crown as a Ramona Queen more than two decades ago, but even after all these years, Anjeanette hasn’t forgotten where she came from or what it gave her. The lessons of Ramona stayed with her: resilience, grace under pressure, and the strength to rebuild when life took a different course.
