Making Memories: Celebrating Grandparents Day

A few memorable ways to celebrate Grandparents Day with your loved ones.

Grandparents Day is a special opportunity to slow down and celebrate some of the most important people in our families. This year, National Grandparents Day falls on Sunday, September 13, giving families in San Diego Country Estates and throughout Ramona a chance to spend a little extra time with the grandparents in their lives.

Grandparents often play a unique role in a child’s life. They can be storytellers, teachers, cheerleaders, caregivers and keepers of family traditions. From sharing stories about what life was like when they were young to teaching grandchildren how to cook a favorite family recipe, the memories created between generations can last a lifetime.

Simple Ways to Celebrate

Grandparents Day doesn't have to involve an expensive gift or elaborate plans. Sometimes the simplest activities create the best memories.

Share a meal. Invite grandparents to breakfast, lunch or dinner. Let the grandchildren help prepare a favorite family recipe.

Take a walk together. Enjoy a stroll around the neighborhood, visit a local park or simply spend some time outdoors talking.

Create a memory book. Children can interview their grandparents about their childhood, first job, favorite memories or family history and write down their answers.

Look through old photographs. Pull out family albums and let grandparents tell the stories behind the pictures. Children may discover family stories they have never heard before.

Have a game night. Play cards, board games or a favorite family game. It’s a simple way for multiple generations to spend time together.

Make something together. Bake cookies, plant flowers, work on a craft or create a special keepsake that can be saved for years to come.

More Than Just One Day

While Grandparents Day gives families a reason to celebrate, the sentiment behind the holiday can extend throughout the year. A phone call, handwritten note, drawing from a grandchild or an afternoon spent together can mean just as much as a planned celebration.

For grandparents who live nearby, Grandparents Day can be a reminder to make time for those everyday moments. For families with grandparents who live farther away, a video call, mailed card or collection of photographs can help keep those connections strong.

In a busy world filled with schedules and activities, spending time together may be one of the greatest gifts families can give one another. Stop by The Oaks Grille on Sunday, September 13, and enjoy a free pancake for Grandma and Grandpa! Open at 8:00 am, a breakfast with your grandparents is a great way to start the day.

This Grandparents Day, take a moment to call, visit, hug or simply sit and talk with a grandparent. The memories made today may become the stories your family tells for generations to come.
