New Shops Bring Fresh Energy to Ramona's Former Kmart Center

SDCE residents look forward to more shopping choices closer to home.

After sitting vacant for years, the former Kmart property on Main Street has been transformed into Ramona Station, bringing new life to one of the town's most recognizable shopping centers. The redevelopment is welcoming several national retailers, including Grocery Outlet, Five Below, PetSmart and Marshalls. The project also includes a new Dollar Tree location and additional retail space. The redevelopment marks a major milestone for Ramona after years of anticipation.

For many San Diego Country Estates residents, the biggest excitement is seeing the long-vacant building bustling with activity once again.

Local SDCE resident and Realtor with Bernd Brokerage, Laura R. Munson says that the Five Below store in Ramona is her kids’ obsession. They have stared at it being constructed with such an anticipation over the past few months that when they finally got back from vacation, that’s the first place they asked to go. “I suppose all of the kid’s birthday parties will be full of Five Below and Marshalls items,” Munson said.

SDCE resident Stacey Back, who has lived in the community since 2017, said she hasn't had the opportunity to visit the new stores yet after being out of town for part of the summer, but she's excited to explore them soon.

"I am VERY happy that we don't have an abandoned building there anymore," Back said. "I am looking forward to checking out the shops."

While she welcomes the new shopping options, Back also emphasized the importance of continuing to support Ramona's locally owned businesses.

"I still plan to support our local venues as well, especially our local pet and feed stores," she said.

SDCE resident Sharon Ferguson has lived in the SDCE for 22 years. “I’m a big fan of Grocery Outlet Bargain Market and was impressed with the store here when it opened,” she said. “I can’t wait for Marshalls to open because it is a much-needed addition to retail in Ramona.”

“Five Below surprised me!” Lora Morel, SDCE resident said. “Great stuff! This place will be sold out for Christmas for sure.” She said that the store had a friendly crew and lots of employees, and it was refreshing to see a company offering plenty of customer service. She added that Five Below was a pleasant surprise and someone could decorate a little girl’s bedroom with all the cute stuff.

The addition of Grocery Outlet gives residents another option for discounted groceries, while Five Below offers an assortment of toys, games, snacks, school supplies, home décor and seasonal items at budget-friendly prices. Grocery Outlet celebrated its grand opening on July 30, featuring community giveaways and a donation to the Kiwanis Club of Ramona.

PetSmart gives local pet owners a convenient new option for pet food, treats, toys, supplies and grooming without having to leave town. The Ramona location has an on-site grooming salon offering baths, grooming, nail trims, teeth brushing and ear cleaning.

Marshalls officially opened in Ramona on August 27, giving local residents another option for shopping closer to home. The popular off-price retailer offers clothing, shoes, accessories, home goods and other brand-name merchandise at discounted prices. The addition of Marshalls is another step in the ongoing redevelopment and expansion of Ramona’s retail offerings. Many residents hope the continued growth will attract more shoppers to the community while reducing the need to travel to neighboring communities for everyday purchases.

The reopening of the former Kmart site represents more than just new shopping opportunities. For many residents, it's a visible sign of growth and renewed investment in Ramona. Whether stopping in for groceries, back-to-school shopping or future pet supplies, the new retail center is quickly becoming another destination for the community while preserving the hometown spirit that residents value.
