Earth Day is Every Day at the Recreation Department

Amy Holsapple, Recreation Manager • Apr 26, 2024

Let's be kind to our planet and make every step count.

At our park, we instill in the children of our program the belief that every day is Earth Day. This mindset is crucial for maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of our park throughout the year. The children take great pride in not only picking up trash but also in using recycled materials to create beautiful artwork.

To further our commitment to recycling, we are implementing changes to our trash cans around the park. We will be introducing new black trash cans alongside blue recycling bins, encouraging visitors to dispose of their waste responsibly. Additionally, within the Recreation Center where children attend before and after-school programs, daycare and camps, we are introducing green bins specifically for leftover food from staff and children's lunches and snacks. These green bins complement our existing black and blue bins.

It's especially important for our children to understand the significance of recycling. From their perspective, recycling is like performing magic! Instead of letting things go to waste in a landfill, recycling gives them a new purpose. We explain to them that recycling is a simple yet impactful way to conserve the Earth's natural resources, such as water, minerals and timber. It also promotes respect for the environment and reduces incineration and landfill waste, among other benefits.

As stewards of the Earth, we recognize that the children will inherit our planet, and it's our responsibility to ensure it's well taken care of, just like our kids.
