Classical French Equitation Clinic Coming to San Diego Country Estates

Riders and horse enthusiasts can explore the art of Classical French Equitation through a two-day clinic focused on balance, communication and building a harmonious partnership between horse and rider.

Horse enthusiasts will have an opportunity to experience the art of Classical French Equitation when an instructional riding clinic comes to the San Diego Country Estates International Equestrian Center on November 7 and 8.

The two-day clinic will feature classical rider, trainer and instructor Gin Reschke, who specializes in combining Classical Equitation with modern equine physiology and neuromuscular therapy. The clinic is designed for riders of all experience levels and disciplines, offering an opportunity to learn techniques that emphasize balance, communication and a harmonious partnership between horse and rider.

Classical French Equitation dates to the Renaissance period and emphasizes cooperation between horse and rider rather than force or mechanical control. The method incorporates an understanding of equine anatomy, psychology and biomechanics to help horses carry their riders with balance, elegance and lightness, using minimal rein pressure.

The tradition is still preserved and demonstrated today by the renowned Cadre Noir, based in Saumur, France, which is internationally recognized for its classical riding instruction and horsemanship.

Reschke's approach combines these traditional principles with modern understanding of equine movement and body mechanics. Her work focuses on helping horses improve their balance, range of motion, posture and overall performance while developing a more willing and relaxed partnership with their riders.

The clinic is being organized by Candace Regel of Regal Horsemanship, who was introduced to Reschke's training methods through local equestrian Jenifer Harwell, who has also been studying Classical Equitation with well-known trainer Pippa Callahan.

"This is Gin's first clinic here, and we plan to have her return every few months," Regel said.

The weekend will feature three riders bringing their own horses, each with varying levels of training. Instruction is currently planned to begin at 9 a.m. and continue until noon or later both Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to the riding instruction, there will be opportunities for discussion about the principles of Classical French Equitation. Auditors are also welcome to register and observe the lessons, participate in the discussions and learn more about the training philosophy.

Depending on interest, organizers may also offer a Saturday evening dinner gathering for riders and auditors to continue conversations about classical horsemanship.

Regel said the ultimate goal of good instruction is to help riders understand how to communicate with horses on their own terms, creating an environment where the horse feels calm, relaxed and willing to participate in the training process.

"That certainly makes for a happy horse," she said.

The Classical French Equitation clinic will take place November 7 and 8 at the San Diego Country Estates International Equestrian Center in Ramona. Space is limited, and advance registration is encouraged.
