Firefighter Balances Flames and Fatherhood as Proud Girl Dad of Three
We celebrate Father's Day and the many ways dads shape our lives, and turn the spotlight on someone who serves both his family and community with unwavering dedication.
Ramona Firefighter John Denhalter has been a firefighter for 23 years and serves as an engineer/paramedic at Station 80, located near Ramona High School. He is a trusted first responder and a homeowner right here in our own San Diego Country Estates community, along with his wife of 11 years, Ashley. According to Ashley, they bought the house in November of 2011 and got the keys on Thanksgiving, which was exciting.
They have three beautiful girls, Sawyer, 9, Norah, 8, and Evelyn, 6. "It's the most amazing thing I have experienced in my life," says John. He grew up surrounded by boys, with eight brothers and one sister who was a tomboy. "It was quite the man show." And at his job, he is surrounded by guys. Marrying Ashley and then having three daughters, he read books to learn about how girls operate. And it's everything he could have asked for.
Being a firefighter has helped shape him for his role as a father thanks to the many men who have served as role models and father figures throughout his career, guiding him along the way. He says that in Cal-Fire, very little ego is involved, and they all build each other up and help one another develop better skills.
The most challenging aspect of balancing firehouse and family life is the long hours. John can be on a shift for up to 21 days. The girls can stop by the station to say hi and grab a quick hug and kiss, and that's enough for them. "My girls grew up in it," says John. He adds that they used to cry before when he would work long hours, but they have grown accustomed to it because he is at work more than half of the month. He is the sole provider for the household, which enables Ashley to be present for the kids.
His proudest moments being a dad include seeing his girls interact with other people. He likes to see the mix of his and Ashley's genetics together and watch them in different environments. He also enjoys watching his kids grow up and experience life for themselves. He says he tries to instill in them that everyone has flaws and to take people at face value for what it's worth. He cherishes seeing his girls' compassion.
Being a girl dad, John has come to the conclusion that he will never be the boss in the house. "Women rule the world." He says he goes about his business and spends his whole life observing. "It's fun to watch."
As we honor fathers this month, we tip our hats to all the dads who serve on the front lines and at home. Being a dad is the greatest title of all, and we thank John Denhalter and all the dads in our community for wearing that title proudly.
