Island Vibes and Smart Minds: Hawaiian Trivia Night Welcomes New Quizmaster

San Vicente Resort was transformed into a tropical trivia paradise as residents and guests welcomed new host Chico Flores for an unforgettable Hawaiian-themed game night.

The aloha spirit was in full swing at San Vicente Resort as residents and guests gathered for a fun-filled Hawaiian Endless Summer Trivia Night, hosted by new Quizmaster Chico Flores on Tuesday evening in The Oaks Grille.

Chico, joined by his wife Janet, son Jackson, and daughters Julianna and Jade, transformed the room into a luau-worthy experience — complete with colorful leis, sparkling tablecloths, beachy décor, and Hawaiian-themed table displays.

Event leads and participants arrived in festive island attire, ready for some friendly competition, tropical fun, and delicious food and drinks — including the night’s featured cocktail, the Blue Lagoon.

This marked Chico’s debut as trivia host, and he made it a night to remember. He made a dramatic entrance through the San Vicente Room’s double doors, brought high energy to the room of over 90 players, and delivered waves of enthusiasm throughout the night.

Trivia Night originator Jodie Taylor was also in attendance to ceremoniously pass the Quizmaster baton to Chico. The evening included a special birthday shoutout to Jodie’s father, Steve Chambers.

The games began with a mix of seasoned trivia teams and new faces. One team kept an open seat in memory of longtime player Rex Gammon and hasn’t missed a game since the series began in November 2023.

Players tackled themed questions across beach vibes, picture rounds, food and drink, geography, geometry, San Diego sports history, TV, film, and music.

Trivia highlights included:

  • What U.S. state is closest to Africa? — Maine (Quoddy Head is closest to Morocco!) Who Knew?
  • Which rock band told us to “Jump” in 1984? — Van Halen, answered correctly by Tim Martin, who exclaimed he was aged 15 when the song came out.
  • Geometry champs? — “I got all the geometry questions right, except one, because I loved geometry in school,” said Toni Massery.

Chico awarded leis to round winners and donated prizes from local businesses for fun bonus questions.

Congratulations to the winning teams!

  • 1st Place: CAT 6 – Trivia veterans from Solar Turbines and returning champions
  • 2nd Place: RASCALS
  • 3rd Place: Plan B

Mahalo, Chico, for hosting an unforgettable evening.

The crowd was larger than we’ve ever had, so we will regroup and plan elements for the next event on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with an NFL Football theme.

Thank you for all you’ve done, Jodie — and welcome, Chico!
