Pickleball Tournament: Saturday, June 29

San Vicente Resort is having its first Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, June 29

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in America. It is played with a pickleball paddle and a wiffle ball. The sport can be played as singles or, most commonly, doubles (two players against two players). Everyone gets to serve, and there are 11 scores total.

San Diego Country Estates Association Executive Assistant Nim Miranda started playing the sport in late 2020 and will be organizing the June 29 pickleball tournament. She started playing in her neighborhood and drew a line to make a court in the street; then, her neighbor told her that there were pickleball and tennis courts at San Vicente Resort. Fun fact: the first "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match between tennis greats Bobby Riggs and Margaret Court was played on the San Vicente tennis courts on Mother's Day 1973. Although Margaret Court lost this local match, the highly promoted second match was won by Billie Jean King in the best of five sets over Riggs held in the Houston Astrodome.

Pickleball is a great exercise for the body and is good for socialization. Miranda has made many friends through the sport while getting a great workout. She wears her watch while she plays and, on average, burns 500 calories during a 2.5-hour period playing the game. Participating in pickleball also helps with balance, agility, reflexes, and hand eye coordination.

The tournament kicks off at 8 am with the women’s division, followed by the mixed division at 11 am and the men’s division at 2:30 pm. The price to play is $35 for Association’s homeowners and $45 for non-homeowners. There is no dress code for pickleball; players just need to be comfortable, so athletic wear is recommended. San Vicente Resort will provide complimentary snacks and water for players. The prizes include gold, silver, and bronze medals. The tournament is open to all ages and free for the public to watch. Everyone is welcome!
