Ramona Rodeo: Tattoos on 'R' Town
The 44th Annual Ramona Rodeo, themed Tattoos on ‘R’ Town, brought sold-out crowds, heartfelt tributes, and thrilling performances that celebrated Ramona’s heritage, heroes, and community spirit.
The 44th Annual Ramona Rodeo rolled into town with this year’s bold theme, Tattoos on R Town, celebrating heritage, heroes, and the colorful spirit that makes Ramona’s rodeo a cherished tradition. Homeowners, families, and equestrian enthusiasts came together to enjoy a weekend filled with community pride.
The arena buzzed with cowboy hats, boots, and western gear as spectators gathered for food, drinks, and handmade crafts. Each night showcased a unique theme that reflected Ramona’s heart: Thursday’s Heritage Night honored the town’s ranching and cultural roots; Friday’s Golden Circle of Champions recognized the resilience of pediatric cancer fighters; and Saturday’s R-Hometown Heroes Night saluted first responders, military, and everyday champions. Both Friday and Saturday nights sold out, while Thursday drew an enthusiastic near-capacity crowd.
The action began with a Team Penning preshow at 6 pm, followed by the main rodeo at 7 pm featuring timed events—Barrel Racing, Breakaway Roping, Tie-Down Roping, Team Roping, and Steer Wrestling—as well as rough-stock thrills including Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, and Bull Riding.
A crowd favorite was the nightly performance of 11-year-old Louie Garcia and his father, Tomas Garcia Alonzo, a third-generation Charro. With Louie narrating and Tomas showcasing his internationally recognized horsemanship, the duo wowed audiences with flawless rope tricks on horseback. “We are off to an excellent start,” said Jess Koehler, Rodeo Chair. “Heritage Night was great and included a special show of a father/son duo.”
Friday’s Golden Circle of Champions event added a heartfelt touch, raising awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research. “Be sure to get there a bit early so you don’t miss that,” Koehler encouraged.
Saturday recognized our local first responders, and people in the stands showed their appreciation with loud cheers. Local realtor and homeowner Chris Anderson hosted her 30th annual catered event to show her appreciation for many clients, joined by county officials.
The rodeo reported its highest fundraising year yet, with funding from many local sponsors, including the San Diego Country Estates Equestrian Center as Silver Spurs Sponsors. Proceeds will benefit the Ramona Rodeo Foundation (RRF), supporting local scholarships, charitable organizations, and community events.
With its blend of competition, cultural tributes, and neighborly spirit, the Ramona Rodeo once again proved to be a cornerstone event, uniting Ramona through tradition and celebration.
