Forever Sweethearts: The Love Story of Charles and Carol Oswalt

Homeowners Charles and Carol Oswalt have built a life full of family, creativity, and joy. Even after four decades, they still treat each other as best friends and lifelong sweethearts.

This is not your typical “boy-meets-girl” romance. Charles and Carol’s story began in 1978 at California First Bank (now US Bank), where they worked side-by-side. Charles was a devoted father to two daughters, and Carol was raising her son. For years, they were simply colleagues and friends, sharing lunches, sitting just a few feet from one another, and supporting each other through daily life. Over time, that friendship blossomed into something deeper. On April 14, 1985, they pledged their love and began a journey that has now spanned more than 40 years.

Together, Charles and Carol built a life rooted in what mattered most to them: family. They cherish countless memories, from driving up to Sonoma County to explore wineries with friends, to the laughter of summers here in the Estates, where grandchildren, and later great-grandchildren, would spend weeks playing games, sharing meals, and creating bonds that will last generations.

Charles and Carol are active in our community, and many readers may recognize them from their years of attending community events, including Concerts in the Park, where they often sit at their lovely table. They also dine in our restaurants, volunteer as Santa with a helper at our annual Golf Shop Balloon Sale, and regularly walk for exercise.

Charles is a man of many talents. Retirement opened the door to new passions: woodcarving, cake decorating, and poetry. In their game room, alongside the pool table, stands a magnificent full-sized carousel horse he carved by hand. He later entered his work at the Del Mar Fair and proudly took home third place, a testament to his artistry and patience. His cakes became family treasures, with loved ones eagerly anticipating each new creation at birthdays and celebrations. And for those who know him as a poet, it’s no surprise that Carol is his greatest muse. His published collection of poetry reflects not only his talent but also the depth of his devotion. This year, our San Vicente Resort Valentine's Day dinner featured one of his poems on the tables.

Carol, in her own quiet way, has been just as creative. An excellent cook, she has also shared her love of music by playing the piano. Her natural eye for design transformed their home into a warm, inviting haven, a reflection of her creativity, hard work, and heart. In fact, their home was once featured on SDCE’s community home tours, admired for its stunning beauty and charm.

These days, life is lived at a gentler pace. Rather than faraway travels, they find joy in simple pleasures within our community and trips to dine at San Diego locations. Whether at home or out on a sunny San Diego morning, they enjoy each other’s company with the same warmth and affection that first brought them together.

Charles and Carol’s love story is one of friendship, laughter, creativity, and family. It is a story that has weathered time with grace, and it’s still unfolding. Forty years later, theirs remains a love that inspires all who know them.
