Fire Fuel Clearing: Nature Trail East “Cope Trail”

Extensive fire fuel clearing and trail restoration on Nature Trail East has enhanced safety, accessibility, and natural beauty for the community, with more work planned in the fall.

Over the past month, the Landscape and Open Space Team has focused its efforts on the Nature Trail East, also known as Cope Trail.

Team members performed extensive clearing, specialized fire fuel-clearing subcontractors, tree trimming crews, and machinery designed for this purpose.

Coordinating logistics and scheduling workers in a limited area while maintaining safety was challenging. However, the results are impressive—dozens of downed trees were removed, and approximately 700 cubic feet of massive logs were cut and hauled away, with a bit more still to do.

Dense underbrush was strategically mowed and cleared to enhance native trees and shrubs and improve the health of the understory.

Auxiliary trails to the south, previously overgrown and nearly unusable, were reopened, widened, and smoothed out.

Homes to the north of the creek also saw significant clearing. A firebreak was developed, with some areas widened by 50 to 100 feet.

A bonus outcome was the removal of large amounts of poison oak that had overtaken our oak trees, making the trail much safer for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders who previously had to dodge it.

While significant debris and overgrowth have been removed, we recognize there is still more work to be done. As the department shifts into its annual weed abatement mowing schedule over the next three months, fire fuel work will pause temporarily.

We hope the community enjoys the newly cleared and refreshed areas that have received the lion’s share of our resources so far this year. We are now a safer, more accessible, and more beautiful community for all to enjoy.

We’ll be back—with more improvements in the fall.
