From Kickoff to Card Off, Super Bowl Couples Tournament Delivers Excitement
The San Vicente Golf Clubs held their Super Bowl Couples Tournament at San Vicente Resort last Saturday, Jan. 24, which combined competitive team golf, football themed fun, and a dramatic finish, culminating in a back nine card off victory for Darla and AJ White teamed with Chico and Janet Flores.
The Super Bowl Couples Tournament took place last Saturday, bringing together couples for a lively day that blended golf with the energy of football’s biggest weekend. From jerseys and team colors to playful banter between shots, the atmosphere mirrored a Super Bowl Sunday celebration while still delivering a serious test on the course.
The tournament featured a team format designed to reward consistency and collaboration. Each foursome counted the 12 lowest individual scores across 18 holes, allowing teams to lean on steady play throughout the round while minimizing the impact of a single tough hole. Two thirds of each player’s handicap were deducted at the end of play, keeping the competition close and the leaderboard competitive until the final holes.
Adding to the Super Bowl spirit were lighthearted, football themed questions shared throughout the day. Tony Massery and Angie Rios revealed that cream cheese jalapeño peppers are their go to Super Bowl snack, though popcorn earned approval as the cleaner option for the turn. Cathy Knowles, sporting a Bo Nix jersey, named Peyton Manning as her dream playing partner, citing his resilience, humor, and ability to persevere through injuries. Trash talk also found its way onto the course, with AJ White admitting he brings it into every round, while Darla White noted her competitive
commentary usually stays on the couch during the game. Rob Fowler summed up the crossover between golf and football best, joking that his driver plays more like a kicker and not a reliable one.
The competition ultimately came down to a dramatic back nine card off. for Darla and AJ White teamed with Chico and Janet Flores secured first place honors with a winning total of 177, edging out the field in a close finish. The Super Bowl Couples Tournament once again showcased San Vicente Golf Club members ability to pair spirited competition with community, fun, and memorable golf moments.
