Holiday Hustle: A Guide to Staying Merry and Stress-Free

Amy Holsapple, Recreation Manager • December 20, 2024

Read about practical tips for managing holiday stress while balancing work, family, and festive community events.

As someone who juggles raising two young children while coordinating preschool and after-school programs, I know firsthand how stressful the holiday season can be. Recently, we wrapped up our Holiday Fair at Ramona Oaks Park—a whirlwind of vendor booths, kids' crafts, and live performances (plus a little Santa magic). The event was a great success, but let me tell you, keeping calm amidst the chaos is an art form.

Here are my tried-and-true tips for managing holiday stress:

Set Differences Aside

During the holidays, family and friends might not always align with your expectations—and that's okay. Accept them as they are and save deeper conversations for another time. Everyone's running on high stress, so a little extra grace goes a long way.

Learn to Say No

This one's a game-changer! Don't be afraid to set boundaries, whether it's your family asking for something you don't have time to do or a friend inviting you to another holiday party. Saying yes only to things that matter most will save you from feeling overwhelmed (and give you more time with the kids).

Stick to a Budget

It's so tempting to splurge this time of year, especially when you want to make the holidays magical for little ones. But remember, happiness isn't about the number of gifts under the tree. Homemade presents or a thoughtful family gift exchange can be just as meaningful—and way easier on the wallet!

Take a Breather

Whether you're corralling preschoolers in a craft class or helping your own kids with holiday projects, carving out 15 minutes of alone time can be a sanity-saver. Take a quiet walk, enjoy a cup of tea, or just sit and breathe—it works wonders.

Don't Abandon Healthy Habits

Between cookie platters and late nights, it's easy to let routines slide. But a little exercise, balanced meals, and decent sleep can make all the difference in staying energized for everything the season throws your way.

Learn to Give

This one is my favorite. At the Holiday Fair, seeing families come together to enjoy crafts and performances reminded me how much joy we can bring by giving back. Whether volunteering or donating to a cause, helping others lifts your spirits like nothing else.

Let's make this holiday season a time to sparkle, not stress. After all, it's about creating special memories—whether at community events or right at home with your loved ones.

Warm wishes for a joyful and balanced holiday season, and I look forward to 2025!
