Landscape Update: Fire Protection, Relaxation, and Tranquility

• Landscape and Open Space Manager Nancy Zadrozny • April 3, 2024

The Association prepares for fire season and beautification continues at the Clubhouse hot tub and future San Vicente Park.

We have begun our annual fire abatement clearing and courtesy mowing of the easements, with a comprehensive schedule planned for April and May.  This will impact various areas in nearly 1,500 acres of Open Space and approximately 38 miles of private easements. Please inspect your easement areas and ensure there are no obstacles hindering the passage of riding mowers. Trim back shrubs encroaching into the clearance zone, maintain appropriate tree clearance and promptly remove any accumulated debris. Your cooperation in maintaining clear easements is appreciated.

San Vicente Park: Turf Reduction to Tranquility

On Monday, March 4, work began for the Turf Reduction Project in the vicinity of the pickleball and tennis courts to create a new area named San Vicente Park. Kindly heed any posted signs and exercise caution around the construction areas.

Throughout the upcoming months until early June, the following disruptions can be expected:

  • Limited access to the tennis and pickleball courts on the west side of the courts.
  • Temporary closures of the courts for brief periods.
  • Presence of construction vehicles and workers along San Vicente Road near the racket sports courts, necessitating increased vigilance from passing vehicles. Appropriate safety measures will be implemented.
  • For updates on court availability, please contact Member-Guest Services.

Hot Tub Garden: Extending the Relaxing Experience

The recently renovated hot tub is now fully operational, and efforts are underway to enhance the surrounding areas, adding to the overall relaxation experience. The sloped garden is designed to incorporate levels adorned with native, low-maintenance and drought-tolerant plants on a drip irrigation system. Additionally, a charming grape trellis with native grape varieties and a wine barrel is installed on one side of the slope, and a stunning "flower-fall" feature, where blooms will cascade gracefully down the slope, has been installed on the opposite side. A dry rock creek bed, which also serves as a drainage pathway and water retention basin, extends the natural aesthetic of the design. Look closely for the small Fairy Garden tucked in, close enough for viewing.

Nearly all the elements and features are “found” items from our area and incorporated into the design.

Work is essentially complete, with small additions over time, and full flowering this summer will serve as a backdrop to the hot tub.
