Ramona Garden Club’s Plant and Craft Sale Supports Local Students and Community Projects

Shop a variety of plants, handcrafted treasures and seasonal gifts while helping fund local student scholarships and community horticultural projects.

The Ramona Garden Club will bring an abundance of plants, handmade crafts and holiday gift ideas to Ramona Oaks Park on Saturday, November 7, from 10am – 2pm, offering visitors an opportunity to shop locally while supporting scholarships and community projects throughout Ramona Valley.

The club’s annual Plant and Craft Sale will coincide with the park’s Craft Fair, joining a variety of vendors for a day of shopping, gardening inspiration and community connection. According to Ramona Garden Club President Robert Holton, the club is the largest of the participating vendors, and everyone works together to support the event.

The plant sale has been a community tradition for approximately 20 years. Over the years, it has been held at several locations around Ramona, including the Albertsons parking lot, Southern California Bank parking lot and the library parking lot.

Visitors can expect an extensive selection of plants at prices significantly lower than those typically found at retail outlets. Most of the plants are propagated by Garden Club members, who spend months preparing for the sale. The club also accepts healthy plant donations from established nurseries, including El Plantio in Escondido and Walter Andersen in Poway.

The selection includes native and non-native plants that attract pollinators, unique succulents, California milkweed, colorful low-growing flowering plants and cut Protea flowers. Gently used gardening items, including tools and garden art that can be repurposed, will also be available.

In addition to plants and gardening supplies, shoppers can browse an assortment of handcrafted items made by Garden Club members. This year’s selection includes Kokedama moss balls featuring small succulents, beautiful sea-life ornaments, hostess gifts and holiday-themed decorations and gifts.

Holton said the breadth and uniqueness of the handmade crafts are among the highlights of this year’s sale. Members use natural resources whenever possible to create their items, making each piece a special find.

Preparing for the event takes months of work. The club’s craft committee organizes workshops throughout the year to ensure members produce enough handmade items for both the seasonal sales and the club’s monthly meetings. Meanwhile, the plant committee helps members determine which plants to propagate, when to begin growing them and which varieties are likely to sell well at the fall and spring events.

Beyond providing an opportunity to shop for plants and crafts, the sale serves an important purpose in the Ramona community. All proceeds support scholarships for local high school students and grants for nonprofit and educational organizations.

This year, the Ramona Garden Club will award $5,500 in scholarships and provide four grants of $500 each, totaling $2,000, to support horticultural projects throughout Ramona Valley.

The event also gives residents an opportunity to connect with others who share an interest in gardening. Holton said the sale brings community members together to exchange gardening passions, knowledge and experiences, helping residents improve their home gardens in Ramona’s challenging growing environment.

Whether shoppers are looking for new additions to their gardens, unique handmade gifts or a way to support local students and community organizations, the Ramona Garden Club’s Plant and Craft Sale offers something for a variety of interests while celebrating the community spirit that has sustained the event for approximately two decades.
