San Diego Country Estates – The time is here to get ready for Back to School!

By Cheryl Schlauch • August 5, 2025

Get your students ready for success this school year with practical tips tailored for families attending Barnett and James Dukes Elementary.

School starts Monday, August 18, and it’s hard to believe summer is already winding down. Many parents are excited for their children to return to school, and now is the perfect time to prepare.

Families in San Diego Country Estates are served by two local public elementary schools—Barnett Elementary and James Dukes Elementary, both part of the Ramona Unified School District. Each school offers a welcoming, academically focused environment with a strong emphasis on family communication and community involvement.

Here are some tips to help families prepare for the new school year:

Prepare Students Emotionally and Socially

  • Ease back-to-school worries: Discuss the first day of school in a positive light. Talk to your child about what they are looking forward to learning, what they think will be fun, and any concerns they have. If possible, visit the school grounds with new and younger students before the first day.
  • Re-establish routines: Begin earlier bedtimes and structured morning routines at least one week in advance.
  • Practice independence: Teach children—especially those in TK–2—to manage their own belongings, such as backpacks and lunchboxes.

Stay Connected with the School

  • Attend Back-to-School Nights: Meet your child’s teacher, learn about classroom expectations, and discover communication platforms.
  • Use the PowerSchool Parent Portal: Both Barnett and James Dukes Elementary use PowerSchool for grades, forms, and school communications. (Barnett is also transitioning to ParentSquare for messaging.)
  • Update emergency contacts and health forms: Ensure all information is current.
  • Communicate proactively: If your child has special needs, allergies, or social concerns, please reach out to the teacher or counselor early.

Put Health & Safety First

  • Stay home when sick: Follow district and county guidelines for illness and community wellness.
  • Stay sun-safe: Pack sunscreen, hats, and refillable water bottles to keep you hydrated. Apply sunscreen before school.
  • Be mindful of traffic: School pick-up and drop-off can be congested. Use crosswalks, obey traffic signs, and model safe behavior for students.

Support Learning at Home

  • Foster a positive mindset: Discuss with your child what they are looking forward to learning, not just about homework.
  • Read daily: Just 15–20 minutes of reading each day supports literacy and builds connection.
  • Create a learning zone: Set up a quiet space at home for reading, reviewing schoolwork, and completing light homework tasks.

Get Involved

  • Join the PTA or school foundation: Both Barnett and James Dukes rely on parent groups to support arts, assemblies, and other enrichment programs.
  • Support fundraisers: Whether it’s a jog-a-thon or book fair, these events build school spirit and community engagement.
  • Volunteer: From library time to classroom help, even small efforts make a significant impact.

Consider Local Factors

  • Use nature as a classroom: With nearby trails, wildlife, and gardens, students may benefit from outdoor learning. Ask your child’s teacher about opportunities.
  • Prepare for extreme weather or emergencies: Ramona can experience high temperatures and wildfires. Stay signed up for alerts and review your family’s emergency pick-up plan.

And have a great school year!
