Summer Movie Nights Return with a Magical Evening Under the Stars

Families, friends, and neighbors gathered for an enjoyable evening of community connection as Gathering Grounds Espresso Bar kicked off its Summer Movie Nights series with a screening of Zootopia on June 12.

What began as a fun summer idea has become a community tradition. Gathering Grounds owner Danica Strand started movie nights last summer and received such a positive response that she continued the event this year. Strand enjoys hosting the free evenings to create a place where the community can gather, connect, and enjoy a movie together.

“When coffee and community come together,” says Strand. “This is our vision.”

San Diego Country Estates resident since 2017, Daron Mathena said movie night is something fun to do with her kids. Mathena’s summer goal is to spend at least one day a week doing something fun in the community throughout the summer.

The free event drew residents from Ramona and San Diego Country Estates, transforming the outdoor space into a welcoming gathering spot filled with laughter, conversation, and family fun. Guests began arriving before sunset to claim their seats, visit with neighbors, and enjoy refreshments while children eagerly anticipated the evening's entertainment.

Adding a unique twist to the event, local organization Critter Encounters brought live animals, giving attendees an opportunity to learn about and interact with a variety of animals before the movie began. The animal presentation proved to be a highlight for many younger guests and complemented the wildlife themes featured in the film.

As daylight faded and the stars emerged overhead, families settled in with complimentary popcorn while others purchased drinks and snacks from Gathering Grounds. The relaxed atmosphere provided an ideal setting for neighbors to reconnect and newcomers to meet members of the community.

When Zootopia began at sunset, the audience responded with enthusiasm, enjoying the animated adventure together in a setting that celebrated both entertainment and community spirit. Children could be seen laughing at their favorite scenes while parents appreciated the opportunity to spend quality time outdoors with family and friends.

The evening marked a successful return of the Summer Movie Nights series and highlighted the importance of community-centered events that bring residents together. Organizers expressed appreciation for the strong turnout and positive support from attendees, many of whom are already looking forward to the next movie night.

Movie Nights will continue through the summer, with The Super Mario Bros. on July 10, and Up on August 14. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the movie begins at sunset. Drinks and snacks are available for purchase from Gathering Grounds, and guest can enjoy complimentary popcorn. Gathering Ground Espresso Bar is located at 23658 San Vicente Road.

For many who attended, the June 12 event was more than just a movie screening, it was a reminder of the close-knit community spirit that makes the Ramona area and San Diego Country Estates such special places to call home.
