Landscape and Open Space: Creating Magic and Beauty While Keeping Us Safe

Nancy Zadrozny, Landscape and Open Space Manager • July 31, 2024

In between the daily work to maintain our landscape and open space, our Landscape Team continues to enhance areas.

Hobbit House

At the corner of San Vicente Road and Ramona Oaks Road, an old tree stump was reimagined and given a new life as a whimsical Hobbit House. Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” series, these small dwelling units are homes to hobbits, fictional creatures characterized by their small stature and love of peace, quiet, and a simple, pastoral lifestyle.

A local carpenter is donating time to build a circular door to capture the home essence of this artistic element in our community. The project is set to be completed this month. This is a little landscape project, which may provide inspiration to people who have experienced it.

“Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.”

 – J.R.R. Tolkien in the “Fellowship of the Ring.”

San Vicente Park

The turf reduction project, completely funded by a county rebate and designed to reduce water use, continues to take shape. The grassy area just west of the tennis courts is being transformed into a park-like design after removing the turf and placing native and drought-tolerant plants. Walking paths, benches, a dry creek bed and a boulder bridge create an area of serenity in nature and extend our community park options.

We have a play park, dog parks and, by the end of September, a people park.

Fire Signs

The SDCEA Fire Safety Committee recommended signs to alert members to the fire danger level in our community, and they were placed in two areas: San Vicente Road and Ramona Oaks Road.
