Spring Cleaning Made Simple: Local Housekeeper Shares Time-Saving Tips for Busy Families
Ramona housekeeper Maggie Lira shares practical, real-life strategies to help families refresh their homes this spring without feeling overwhelmed.
As spring arrives in Ramona, many families feel the urge to refresh their home, but finding the time and energy to tackle deep cleaning can be a challenge. For Maggie Lira, owner of Maggie and Yolanda’s Housekeeping, cleaning isn’t just seasonal, it’s a way of life rooted in years of experience.
Lira officially took over her family’s housekeeping business eight years ago, but her journey began much earlier. “I’ve been helping my mom since I was about seven years old,” she said. From assisting with cleaning jobs to managing client schedules, she learned early on what it takes to run a successful and trusted service.
Today, Maggie and her team serve clients throughout the San Diego Country Estates and Ramona area, occasionally traveling for specialized jobs like deep cleans or preparing homes for the real estate market.
When it comes to spring cleaning, Lira emphasizes that it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, she says the key to maintaining a clean home is consistency. “Doing a little bit as you go makes a big difference,” she explained. “If you keep up with small tasks, it prevents things from building up and becoming harder to manage later.”
For busy families, this approach can be a game changer. Simple habits like wiping surfaces regularly or staying on top of dishes can reduce the need for long, exhausting cleaning sessions.
One of Lira’s favorite time-saving techniques is using a timer. By setting a dedicated amount of time for a specific task or area, people can stay focused and avoid getting distracted. “It helps you stay on track and actually finish what you started,” she said.
She also shared a practical tip for homeowners in Ramona, where well water is common. Glass shower doors can quickly develop buildup, but using a squeegee after each shower can help maintain a clear, clean surface with minimal effort.
When it comes to cleaning supplies, Lira prefers simple, effective products. Her go-to essentials include Dawn dish soap, vinegar, and Bar Keepers Friend; items that are affordable, versatile, and powerful enough to handle most household tasks.
Having the right tools also makes a noticeable difference. Lira recommends a reliable corded vacuum, especially for homes with pets, as well as robot vacuums that can run on a schedule to help keep floors consistently clean. For tile flooring, steam mops are a favorite, and she stresses the importance of using separate mop heads for different areas of the home to maintain hygiene.
While daily and weekly upkeep is important, deep cleaning still has its place. Lira suggests that homes can typically be deep cleaned about twice a year if regular maintenance is kept up. However, she notes that every household is different, and factors like pets, children, and overall activity level can require more frequent attention.
She also shared a few lesser-known professional tips: Bar Keepers Friend works well on tubs and toilets without the strong smell of bleach, vinegar or alcohol can be used as natural disinfectants, and stainless steel should always be cleaned with the grain for the best results. For stubborn buildup on flat-top stoves, carefully using a blade can help remove residue effectively.
Beyond cleaning itself, Lira believes decluttering is one of the most important steps in any spring refresh. “If you haven’t used something in a long time, it might be time to let it go,” she said. Reducing clutter not only makes cleaning easier but also creates a more comfortable and organized living space.
For those who can manage it, she encourages hiring a professional housekeeper. “A lot of people feel like they have to do everything themselves,” she said. “But having someone help can take a lot of stress off and it also supports a local small business.”
Whether tackling a full spring overhaul or simply trying to stay on top of everyday messes, Lira’s advice is clear: keep it simple, stay consistent, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed.
